TEM Diffraction Detection

CheeTah M3

The Hybrid-Pixel Detector Built for 3D Electron Diffraction

CheeTah M3 is a hybrid-pixel electron detector built on CERN's Medipix3 technology, designed for 3D electron diffraction (3D-ED) and related TEM diffraction techniques. Its thick sensor and 24-bit dynamic range record the intense direct beam and the faintest reflections in the same saturation-free pattern — and its separated sensor-electronics architecture makes it robust against the focused-beam conditions that can damage other direct-detection cameras.

Key Capabilities for 3D-ED

Built on the Medipix3RX chip from the CERN Medipix collaboration — the same detector platform used at leading TEM facilities worldwide.

Zero-Noise Single-Electron Counting

Every 55 µm pixel counts individual electrons above an adjustable energy threshold. There is no read-out noise and no dark current — every electron above threshold is registered, everything below is discarded.

Radiation-Hard by Design

The thick sensor absorbs the full electron dose, and the pixel electronics sit physically separate from the sensor layer. A focused or parked beam does not damage the detector — no burn spots, no dose-rate ceiling to work around.

Saturation-Free Dynamic Range

A 24-bit counter stores more than 16 million counts per pixel. The intense direct beam and the faintest reflection are captured in a single pattern, with no beam stop and no blooming.

512 × 512 Resolution

The Quad configuration doubles the linear pixel sampling of a standard single-chip 256 × 256 detector, for finer reciprocal-space resolution on the same active area.

Mature Software Integration

Native support for SerialEM and Instamatic means CheeTah M3 drops into the data collection and processing pipelines your lab already uses — no new software stack to validate.

Fast, Low-Downtime Installation

Typical installation is complete within two days. A retractable mounting option keeps the detector clear of other techniques on the same column when it's not in use.

Pricing & Availability

€129,000 starting

An upgrade to your existing TEM column — not a new capital project. Typical installation is complete within two days, with minimal downtime on the instrument.

Prices exclude customs duties and taxes. Final configuration depends on your TEM model and chamber geometry — contact us to confirm compatibility.
